Running Before the Wind

A situation at sea when a vessel experiences a gale blowing directly at the stern of the ship. It creates a situation which is both exhilarating and dangerous. For it creates maximum speed. But the helmsman cannot easily control the course of his schooner. Wilfred often felt as if in his life, he was ‘running before the wind’. As if carried along by forces beyond his control.
